When traveling to Honolulu, Hawaii. How much money do I need to plan on taking?
I am going to stay in Honolulu for 5 days. I have saved up $600 eating and spending money. Will I have enough or will I feel that I have to watch my spending close?

I assume by your statement that you are not including money for lodging in your $600. If that is the case, you should be okay depending on where you eat and what activities (tours, etc.) you go on. If the $600 includes money for lodging, you will have to be prudent with what is left after you pay for lodging.

$600 is not enough. We are going to Maui in a couple of days and are only staying for 5 days, 4 nights. Our hotel came to more than $600. Not only that you have to include transportation. Car rental or taxi can get expensive. Also food is expensive-restaurants AND grocery. You could try to save money by renting a condo place that has a kitchen and you can cook your meals. Also the activities are expensive! I haven't found many activities that are less than $80 a person. What I did was made a mock trip plan. Make a spreadsheet or list and list EVERYTHING you'd do each day. Hotel, transportation, food each day, activities, etc (don't forget to included taxes, and fees, etc for all that stuff). Add up the numbers and see if you have enough. Also make sure you have a credit card with lots of space on it. If you rent a car they hold a deposit. Hotels esp. condos hold big deposits until your stay is over, and if you do any jet skiing or equipment rental, they usually hold deposits. Just remember Hawaii is an expensive place and they nickel and dime you everywhere you turn. You don't want to be stuck down there after only a few days and only $20 left in your pocket.

Since you say the $600 is for eating/spending money I think you'll be ok 1) if you have a fridge/microwave in your room, stock up on breakfast foods & snacks - also if you can pack sandwiches a few times you'll save a lot and there are tons of great beach parks for picnics! Also try the Galaxy Steak House in Waikiki - huge breakfast for $5, its just a little hole in the wall but the food is really good! 2) Plate Lunch - there are hundreds of great plate lunch places all over the islands, generally $5-$7 each - plate lunch is a scoop of rice, 1-3 meat entrees, macaroni salad & slaw - try tons of different things and never break your budget. Try South Shore Grill in Waikiki and Keneke's in Waimanolo (my personal favorites) 3) If you do some research you can find nice dinners that wont break the bank, just look in local publications for coupons and specials - and there is always fast food, I'm sorry to say 4) If you want to do a lot of shopping I suggest the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet on Wed/Sat - only a few dollars entry fee and TONS of amazing deals, think 20 t-shirts for $10 - you can get everything! There are tons of free activities (pearl harbor, pali lookout, the north shore, waikiki beach etc), and many have a very low entry fee (Hanauma Bay snorkeling, Diamond Head, Valley of Temples, lots of galleries, museums and more) So lets see: breakfast $5 or less with groceries - $25-30 Lunch $7-$10 if you splurge - $50 Dinner $10-$20 if you splurge a bit - $100 Food - you could get away with $200 or less if you do it smart - and remember fresh fruit makes a great snack & is very plentiful That leaves you $400 for spending & shopping & seeing - plan on some fun, free or inexpensive activities you should be fine. You wont be going parasailing or to expensive luaus but you'll have a great time! Aloha!
